Enjoy summer without damaging your skin

It’s all too easy to let go over the summer months – as we know, too much alcohol, too little sleep, and lots of barbecues is not a recipe for healthy, blemish free skin.

Whilst we are by no means suggesting that you forgo all of your indulgences, here are a few tips for enjoying the summer months without wreaking havoc on your skin.

Eat a Protein Based Breakfast

What you eat for breakfast will set you up for the rest of the day, so base your breakfast on protein (organic eggs, kippers, smoked salmon for example).

Drink Green Tea Throughout the Day

Green tea provides antioxidant protection from free radical damage to cells – free radicals are produced a number of ways, including smoking, alcohol and poor food choices. Indications are it can also (slightly) lessen the effects of alcohol. Drink up!

Wear sunscreen

It’s not just Baz Luhrman who will give you this advice, the sun can wreak havoc on your skin and while it won’t cause acne, and might even help your skin, but we we suggest only buying and wearing ones with “oil free,” “noncomedogenic,” or “nonacnegenic” labels, as these don’t clog your pores and cause acne.

Match Water to Alcohol

Alcohol is dehydrating so alternating between alcoholic drinks and water can help keep your skin hydrated. It will also help you drink less and reduce the severity of your hangover the next morning!

Snack Healthily

It’s all too easy to mindlessly chomp away on those greasy chicken wings, sausages and burgers when having fun in the sun with your friends. So, when eating, always focus on the food rather than on the television, computer or any other distraction, this will help you to consume less.

Choose healthier snacks too – fresh berries and nuts make a great, skin-friendly snack.

Fill up on Vegetables

… so that you go easier on the greasy grilled foods, although most people love a BBQ, meat can be difficult for your body to breakdown.

Fibre in vegetables will binds toxins and provides the roughage needed to eliminate waste from the digestive system.
