Can Sleeping With Makeup On Cause Acne?

Earlier this month on Facebook, we shared an interesting experiment that The Daily Mail had carried out in order to expose what happens when you don’t remove your makeup and cleanse before bed.

The article said that a third of us sleep with our makeup on twice weekly, so for a whole month, journalist Anna Pursglove applied makeup as normal but never took it off. By the end, experts said her skin had aged by a decade!

We asked The Lustre Clinic‘s makeup expert, Becca Harrison, to explain how detrimental sleeping with your makeup on can be – and how it can result in the development of acne!

She said: ‘As a makeup artist, I am very aware of the side effects of sleeping in your makeup which can result in unnecessary exposure to the free radicals in the environment, which are retained by the makeup itself.

‘Free radicals cause the breakdown of healthy collagen, which results in fine lines on the skin. Additionally, makeup can clog the pores while you sleep, resulting in the development of acne.

‘Your skin is the body’s largest organ and provides important functions as well as being the outer layer of the physical body, so in overall health terms, it is important to care for it well as you can.

‘I would always recommend maintaining a daily cleansing routine each night where possible, before applying a night moisturiser or nourishing skin oil before you go to bed.

‘If pressed for time, a good quality facial wipe is always a better alternative than not taking your makeup off at all.

‘Combining this with gentle facial massage once a day will help your skin to stay happy, healthy and glowing from the inside out!’
